Intuitive knowing has saved my life, more than once. Perhaps it has saved yours?

One cold winter day in New Hampshire I was solo climbing up a steep ice couloir on Mount Washington. Climbing without a rope on steep ice requires full attention because if you fall you  die. The sky was blue, the ice was in good condition, and I was feeling strong. There is a point in the climb where it takes a “dog leg” up to the right.  Just as I reached that point something told me to move left into a small alcove under a large boulder at the turn. There was no obvious reason to do so and in alpinism moving up quickly and efficiently is the best way to stay alive.

Even so, I didn’t think about it I just chopped my way over to the alcove. No sooner had I gotten over there than I heard a sound like a jet plane passing close overhead and the next thing I knew an avalanche roared down the gully obliterating the place where I just been. If I had been still standing in that spot I would’ve been swept away and buried in a pile of ice and snow at the base of the climb.

So, how did I know to move to a safe spot, the only safe spot on the climb, at just the right moment? Some would say I was lucky, or that an angel was looking out for me or some other such notion. These types of explanations are not very satisfying to me.

I’m looking for better explanation, one that might enable me and you to access this type of knowing more readily.

I believe this kind of knowing, this intuitive knowing, is available to all of us. It is a skill that can be learned and consciously applied. And that when we do we will experience less struggle and more joy in our lives.

What do you believe ? What if you had full access to your own intuitive knowing?

There’s a lot of ignorance, prejudice, fear, and misunderstanding about intuition general and what I’m calling Intuitive Knowing in particular.

My goal is to change that.

So, where to start? I believe the best place to start is with people who have experienced intuitive knowing and who are willing to share their story.

ABOUT DOUG FROST

I am a psychology Ph.D. with an extensive background in clinical psychology, consulting psychology, executive coaching, and leadership development. I have a long-standing interest in the interplay of mind- body- spirit in health and performance. My personal and professional experience have convinced me that as powerful as Western science and medicine are, they represent but one of many ways of knowing. To understand ourselves and the world we share more fully it is essential that we access and apply other ways of knowing. In so doing we may come to a new understanding of what it truly means to be human.
